Leeway se formó en Astoria, Nueva York, EE.UU. en 1984 por el guitarrista AJ Novello y vocalista Eddie Sutton bajo el nombre de The Unruled. Han tocado con grupos como Crumbsuckers, Prong, Ludichrist, Bad Brains y Sick Of It All, en sus inicios tenían influencias Hardcore punk orientado a CBGB hasta metaleras. El hecho es que la banda experimento con sonidos, tuvo dos guitarristas y solos basados en riffs entre éstos y el cantante vestido con trajes de esqueleto y uniformes de los Yankees, también fuera del resto de la escena Hardcore Punk. En noviembre de 1987, ellos entraron al estudio Normandy Sound, en Warren, Rhode Island y grabaron su primer álbum de estudio, Born to Expire. Sin embargo, debido a los retrasos y aplazamientos, el álbum no fue publicado hasta enero de 1989. Vinieron 3 álbumes mas, Desperate Measures, Adult Crash y Open Mouth Kiss, antes de que la banda se desintegrara. Se volvieron a unir recientemente.
