El doctor Siegbert Tarrasch (1862-1934) fue uno de los mejores jugadores de ajedrez de finales del siglo XIX. Su principal contribución al ajedrez fue asimilar las enseñanzas de Steinitz y llevarlas a un mayor grado de refinamiento, con lo que el juego experimentó una importante evolución.

Durante su carrera como jugador, tuvo la "desgracia" de coincidir en el tiempo con Emanuel Lasker, al que no pudo derrotar en la lucha por el título mundial.

Actualmente hay varias aperturas que llevan su nombre, como la variante Tarrasch de la defensa francesa o la defensa Tarrasch del gambito de dama.

Una de sus frases más conocidas, y que ha pasado a la historia por su carácter universal, fue: "El ajedrez, como la música o como el amor, tiene el poder de hacer feliz a la gente".
