Thika

Thika es una ciudad comercial en la Provincia Central de Kenia, situada en la carretera A2, 40 kilómetors al noreste de Nairobi. La población tiene una 88.265 habitantes (según censo de 1999) y está creciendo rápidamente, al igual que toda la zona de mayor Nairobi. La elevación de Thika es 1531 metros sobre el nivel del mar.

Thika es el hogar de las Chania Falls y la Thika Falls. Como atracción turística, el Parque Nacional Ol Donyo Sabuk se encuentra a su sudeste. La ciudad tiene una estación de tren, pero sólo hay servicio limitado de pasajeros. La ciudad es sede del distrito de Thika.

Thika está cerca de "Catorce Falls" que es un sitio popular de picnic.

Thika fue antiguamente un centro de la industria ligera, pero el foco se ha desplazado a Athi River. El declive de la industria textil ha afectado a las empresas locales, incluida la empresa de telas Mills Thika (MCT), que es un fabricante de tejidos de algodón que compite con Egipto y los fabricantes chinos.

La Llama de árboles Thika (Memorias de un africano la Infancia) es un libro de Elspeth Huxley, más tarde adaptado para la televisión de Euston Films para Thames Television. En él se describe la vida de Inglés colonos en el "White Highlands" en tiempos de Edwardian. Un árbol de la llama se convierte totalmente en color naranja rojizo de junio de cada año, dependiendo de las precipitaciones anteriores.
