Es la cuarta competición nacional de copa más antigua del mundo. Desde su inicio hasta el año 1921 tomaron parte equipos de Irlanda e Irlanda del Norte pero a partir de ese año se formó exclusivamente con clubes del segundo país.
Actualmente está patrocinada por JJB Sports y anteriormente por la Nationwide Building Society y Bass Ireland Ltd.
