George Johnstone Stoney

George Johnstone Stoney (15 de febrero de 1826, Oakley Park - 5 de julio de 1911, Londres) fue un físico y matemático irlandés que acuñó el término electrón en 1874. Trabajó para la Universidad Nacional de Irlanda.


Estudioso de la estructura de la materia, se dedicó a realizar una primera evaluación del número de Avogadro. En 1874 estableció la hipótesis según la cual la electricidad era creada por unos corpúsculos elementales que llamó inicialmente (1874) "electrinos" y luego (1891) "electrones", cuya carga intentó calcular.

Cómo peculiaridad, cabe decir que en Jerez de la frontera, todos los años, el 5 de enero se celebra en un pequeño bar conocido como la reja también conocido como el Rincón de Manolo el día de George J. Stoney
