El Morning Chronicle fue un periódico británico creado por William Woodfall en 1769. Se convirtió en un periódico de éxito después de haber sido adquirido por James Perry en 1789. Perry, un defensor de los Whigs, los radicales de contratación conocido como Richard Sheridan y Henry Brougham a escribir para el periódico.

Perry, el apoyo de la reforma parlamentaria lo puso en conflicto con las autoridades y en 1793 fue acusado de libelo sedicioso. Defendido por Thomas Erskine, el jurado decidió que era "culpable de la publicación, pero sin mala intención". El juez se negó a aceptar el veredicto y después de otro día de debate, decidió que él era "no culpable". Gray, Perry y fueron menos afortunados en 1798 cuando fueron hallados culpables de libelo a la Cámara de los Lores y condenado a tres meses en la prisión de Newgate.
