Roger Tory Peterson (28 de agosto de 1908 – 28 de julio de 1996), fue un naturalista, ornitólogo, pintor y educador que fue uno de los inspiradores del movimiento ecologista del siglo XX.

Nació en Jamestown, Nueva York. En 1934 publicó su obra seminal Guide to the birds, la primera guía de campo moderna. Este libro tuvo cinco ediciones. Peterson editó o escribió muchos de los volúmenes de la serie Peterson Field Guide sobre diversos temas desde geología hasta escarabajos y reptiles. Es famoso por las claras ilustraciones de sus guías de campo y el claro resalte de las marcas relevantes para la correcta identificación en el campo. También desarrolló el Peterson Identification System.

Peterson recibió numerosos premios americanos por sus contribuciones en ciencia natural, ornitología y conservación así como numerosas distinciones, medallas honoríficas incluyendo la Presidential Medal of Freedom de los Estados Unidos.

Peterson coescribió Wild America junto con James Fisher.
