Sissieretta Jones

Sissieretta Jones (Matilda Sissieretta Joyner) nació el 5 de enero de 1869 en Portsmouth, Virginia, Estados Unidos y murió el 24 de junio de 1933 en Providence, Rhode Island.

Estudió en el New England Conservatory of Music y en 1887 cantó en el Boston's Music Hall debutando en New York en 1888 en el Steinway Hall. El manager de la diva Adelina Patti la escuchó recomendándola para una gira por el oeste y el Caribe con los Fisk Jubilee Singers. En 1892 cantó en la Casa Blanca para el presidente Harrison, hecho que se repitió en tres oportunidades para tres presidentes (Grover Cleveland, William McKinley y Theodore Roosevelt).

En junio de 1892 fue la primera soprano afroamericana en cantar en Carnegie Hall, cantó en Europa en Covent Garden y con Antonín Dvorák en el National Conservatory of Music, en Berlin, Munich, Milan y en el “Grand African Jubilee” del Madison Square Garden en 1892.

La apodaron "La Patti negra"(por Adelina Patti) e hizo giras por Australia, India, Sudamerica y Africa.

Se retiró en 1915 y vendiendo sus posesiones para cuidar a su madre enferma, murió sin un centavo.
