Bandelier nació en Bern. Su educación inicial fue muy poca ya que nunca fue a la escuela sino hasta que tenia ocho años. Como joven emigro a los Estados Unidos, trabajando en el negocio de la familia. bajo el apoyo Under the mentorsh y supervisión del arqueólogo Lewis Henry Morgan se enfoca en lo académico, más particulamente de la arqueología y la etnología.
