Radium Girls

Las Chicas del radio (Radium Girls) fue el nombre que se le otorgó a un grupo de trabajadoras que sufrieron envenenamiento por radiación por pintar diales de relojes con una pintura radioluminiscente utilizada en la fábrica United States Radium en Orange, New Jersey, por el año 1917. Las mujeres, a las que se les había dicho que la pintura no era nociva, ingirieron cantidades mortales de radio por chupar sus pinceles para afinarlos. Algunas incluso llegaron a pintar sus uñas con la sustancia luminiscente.

Cinco de las mujeres llevaron a juicio a su jefe, donde se establecieron los derechos de los empleados que contraen enfermedades laborales.
