Tom Swift

Tom Swift (en otras versiones: Tom Swift, Jr.) es el nombre del personaje principal en cinco series, en total 100 volúmes, de las novelas estadounidenses de ciencia ficción y aventura, que abordan los tema de ciencia, invención y tecnología. El personaje fue creado por Edward Stratemeyer, fundador del Síndicato Stratemeyer. Sus aventuras han sido escritas por una serie de escritores fantasmas a lo largo de los años. La mayoría de los libros han sido publicados bajo el pseudónimo colectivo Victor Appleton. Los 33 volúmenes de la segunda serie utilizan el seudónimo de Victor Appleton II.

El personaje apareció por primera vez en 1910. Nuevos títulos han sido publicados en 2007. La mayor parte de la serie se centra en los diversos inventos de Tom, algunos de los cuales prevén invenciones reales. El personaje ha sido presentado en diferentes formas en los últimos años. En general, los libros retratan a la ciencia y la tecnología como totalmente beneficiosos en sus efectos y el papel del inventor en la sociedad es tratada como admirable y heroica.

Traducidos a un gran número de idiomas, los libros han vendido alrededor de 30 millones de copias en todo el mundo. Tom Swift también ha servido como inspiración para un juego de mesa y para un show de televisión. Varias prominentes figuras, incluidas Steve Wozniak y Isaac Asimov, han citado a Tom Swift como inspiración. Algunas invenciones, incluidas el taser, han sido inspiradas en los inventos ficticios.
