En sus orígenes, la banda estaba formada por los hermanos Mike (sintetizadores, voz cantante) y Ali Score (batería), Frank Maudsley (bajo) y Paul Reynolds (guitarra). Su lanzamiento al estrellato internacional vino de la mano de la cadena de televisión musical MTV, con el video musical I Ran (So far away) (1982), canción que identifica perfectamente el estilo musical y estético de la banda.
