Edward Cartwright

Edward (Edmund) Cartwright (24 de abril de 1743 en Marham, Nottinghamshire — 20 de octubre de 1823 en Hastings, Sussex) fue un clérigo e inventor Inglés. Inventó el telar mecánico.

Carrera como inventor

Más afortunado que sus predecesores, acometió el conflicto de las tejedoras mecánicas cuando la técnica ya había avanzado bastante, pues se habían resuelto los problemas del hilado mecánico con la spinning jenny de James Hargreaves y el trabajo en cadena, sin los que no podría haber tenido éxito su sistema. Diseñó el primer telar mecánico en 1784 y la patentó en 1785, pero el diseño era inservible. Sin embargo, un año más tarde patentó otra tejedora que ha servido como modelo para inventores posteriores. Era consciente de que para que un telar mecánico alcanzara el éxito o una persona tendría que poder atender a muchas máquinas o cada máquina debería de ser más productiva que una tejedora manual. Añadió partes que ningún telar, mecánico o manual, había tenido nunca. Con esta máquina empezó a fabricar telas en Doncaster descubriendo muchos de los defectos de su diseño. Intentó remediarlos introduciendo una manivela de ruedas excéntricas que accionaba los listones de forma separada, creando un dispositivo para detener el telar cuando una lanzadera no entraba en su caja correspondiente, impidiendo que la lanzadera rebotase al chocar contra el fondo de la caja y estirando la tela automáticamente. Este descubrimiento fue averiguado gracias a que uno de los inventores era aficionado a la bebida y ayudó en el avance del invento. Luego, al patentarlo, se llevó todo el mérito de la primera máquina de hilar de vapor...

Familia

  • Su hermana Elizabeth (1780–1837) escribió varias novelas bajo el seudónimo de Mrs Markham.
