La Firestone Tire and Rubber Company fue fundada por Harvey Firestone a finales del siglo XIX para fabricar neumáticos para vehículos de transporte. Firestone vio pronto la utilidad de los neumáticos para los vehículos y la gran rentabilidad. Contactó con Henry Ford, el primer fabricante que usó técnicas de producción en cadena. Así, Firestone llegó a un acuerdo con Ford para proveer de neumáticos a los coches fabricados por éste, además de vender neumáticos independientemente.

Firestone tenía la sede principal en Akron, Ohio, donde también se encontraba la sede principal de su rival, Goodyear. Ambas compañías se convirtieron en los proveedores más grandes de neumáticos en Estados Unidos durante 75 años. Finalmente, la compañía fue comprada por otra compañía del sector, la japonesa Bridgestone, en el año 1988.

Firestone también estuvo en la Fórmula 1 desde 1950 hasta 1974, cuando fueron retirados debido a los últimos accidentes mortales que habian ocurrido a pilotos que llevaban estos neumáticos: François Cevert y Helmuth Koinigg (Este último murió degollado)
