Folkestone es una ciudad costera (con un importante puerto) del sureste de Inglaterra, perteneciente al distrito de Shepway en el condado de Kent. La construcción del túnel del Canal de la Mancha, que conectó esta ciudad con la ciudad francesa de Calais, la convirtió en la puerta de entrada de Gran Bretaña. Capel-Le-Ferne, Cheriton, Hythe y Hawking son algunas de sus ciudades satélite. Tenía 45.708 habitantes en 2001.

Folkestone y Hythe están representadas en el Parlamento por el conservador Michael Howard, antiguo Secretario de Interior y antiguo líder del Partido Conservador.

Está hermanada con las ciudades de Boulogne-sur-Mer (Francia) y Middleburg (Países Bajos).

Quizá el hijo más famoso de Folkestone haya sido William Harvey (descubridor de la circulación de la sangre, nacido allí en 1578). Relacionados con esta ciudad también estuvieron los escritores H.G. Wells y Charles Dickens, que vivieron allí.
