Hubert H. Bancroft

Hubert Howe Bancroft (Granville, Ohio, 1832 - 1918), historiador, hispanista y bibliógrafo estadounidense.

Recopiló todo tipo de materiales para historiar la conquista del lejano Oeste de Estados Unidos. Escribió California Pastoral: 1769-1848 (San Francisco: The History Co., 1888); History of the North Mexican States and Texas (San Francisco: 1884); History of Utah, 1540-1886 (San Francisco, 1889)'; The Native Races of the Pacific States of North America (New York: Appleton, 1875) y, sobre todo, History of California (San Francisco: The History Co., 1884-1890) en siete volúmenes. Como hispanista se le debe una History of Central America (San Francisco, 1887). También escribió biografías, como la History of the Life of William Gilpin. A Character Study (San Francisco, 1889). En su honor se erigió la Biblioteca Bancroft de la Universidad de California en Berkeley.
