Janet Frame, completo Janet Paterson Frame Clutha (28 de agosto de 1924, Dunedin - 29 de enero de 2004) fue una novelista, escritora de cuentos y poeta neozelandesa.

Trayectoria

Su familia fue humilde (su padre era ferroviario y su madre, enfermera y luego sirvienta), lo que le permitió una observación muy diversa de las cosas y la naturaleza. Tras su infancia en Nueva Zelanda llena de cambios por el oficio de su padre, y viviendo siempre en un ambiente modesto, Frame se preparó como maestra. Desde el principio, como muestra en su autobiografía, tuvo una conciencia aguda y dolorosa por el lenguaje. Varias veces fue internada en instituciones mentales, escapando por poco de ser sometida a una lobotomía, modo agresivo de tratar su presunta esquizofrenia. El premio que ganó le evitó esa irreversible experiencia. Su primer libro fue la colección de cuentos The Lagoon (1951). Su novela Owls Do Cry (1957) combina la poesía y la prosa reflexionando acerca de sus investigaciones sobre los límites entre la cordura y la locura.

En conjunto, Frame escribió cinco libros de relatos y doce novelas, varias de las cuales se basan en leyendas maoríes. Incluyen los títulos Scented Gardens for the Blind (1963) y The Carpathians (1988). El segundo de sus tres volúmenes de memorias, An Angel at My Table (1984), fue llevado a la pantalla grande por Jane Campion y premiada en Venecia. Hoy se conoce el conjunto biográfico por ese nombre: Un ángel en mi mesa.

Se considera que Frame es la segunda escritora en importancia, tras Katherine Mansfield, de su país. Ha sido candidata al Nobel, ha merecido diversos premios (como el Commonwealth de literatura). Fue miembro de la Academia Americana de las Artes y las Letras.
