John Douglas Surman, nació el 30 de agosto de 1944 en Tavistock, Devon, (Inglaterra). Es un músico de jazz especializado en saxofón soprano, clarinete bajo y sintetizador, además de compositor de free-jazz y jazz modal, usando, a menudo, temas de la música tradicional como base. También ha compuesto y ha realizado mucha música para espectáculos de danza y las bandas sonoras de películas.
