Jotán

Jotán es un nombre hebreo (yo-tan) que sigifica ‘[el dios] Yah es perfecto’ o ‘que Yah complete’.[1]

En la Biblia aparecen tres personajes con ese nombre:

  • Un descendiente de Judá a quien se llama «hijo de Jahdai» (1 Crónicas 2:47)
  • Jerubaal, el hijo más joven del juez Gedeón, que residía en Ofrá (Jueces 8:35 y 9:5). A la muerte de Gedeón,Abimélec (el hijo que tuvo con su esclava), mató a todos sus hermanos con excepción de Jotán, que fue ocultado. Posteriormente, cuando terratenientes de Siquem hicieron rey a Abimélec, Jotán se subió a la cima del monte Gerizím, y se sirvió de una ilustración para presentar una maldición profética sobre los terratenientes y Abimélec. Luego Jotán huyó y estableció su residencia en Beer. (Jueces 9:6-21, 9:57)
  • Jotán de Judá, rey de Judá entre el 741 y el 734 a. C., hijo del rey Uzías (Azarías) y de Jerusá (hija de Sadoc). Según 2 Reyes 15:32,33; 1 Crónicas 13:12; 2 Crónicas 27:1; Mateo 1:9).
