En febrero de 2008, Bill Gates obtuvo el tercer lugar en la lista de las personas más ricas del mundo, con una fortuna estimada en USD $58 mil millones.

En el ámbito de los negocios, un magnate es aquella persona que ha alcanzado un lugar prominente dentro de una o varias industrias. Usualmente, los magnates amasan fortunas sustanciosas y tienden a hacerse conocidos por su habilidad para los negocios, y a veces por sus despilfarros de dinero para satisfacer gustos extravagantes, y ocasionalmente, por sus obras benéficas. El término «magnate» deriva de la palabra latina, magnātes (plural de magnas), que significa «gran persona» o «gran noble», aunque es de notar que la etimología de la palabra «magnate» no tiene nada que ver con su significado actual.

Algunos ejemplos conocidos son: el magnate de comunicacion Carlos Slim, el magnate de la prensa escrita William Randolph Hearst, el petrolero John D. Rockefeller, el naviero Aristóteles Onassis, Jean Paul Getty, y el cofundador de Microsoft, Bill Gates.
