Marr fue un historiador y lingüista que gano una solida reputación como un prolífico escolar del Caucaso antes de embarcarse en su controversial teoría monogenetica del lenguaje (conocida como teoría jafética) y en las tesis relacionadas sobre lingüística especulativa, hipótesis que constituyeron la ideología oficial de los lingüistas soviéticos hasta 1950, cuando el mismo Stalin las desacredito como anti científicas.
