Papatowai es un pequeño asentamiento localizado en The Catlins, en la Isla Sur de Nueva Zelanda (46°36′S 169°28′E / -46.6, 169.467). El asentamiento se encuentra a medio camino entre las ciudades de Dunedin e Invercargill, en la costa pacífica, cerca de la desembocadura del Río Tahakopa. Existe una población permanente de alrededor de 30 personas, pero la mayoría de las construcciones de la localidad son residencias vacacionales (conocidas localmente como "cribs") la población crece bastante durante la época vacacional, especialmente en Navidad y Semana Santa.

Papatowai está rodeado por bosques y hay numerosos senderos que parten de la localidad para visitar playas arenosas y cascadas. Además hay un sendero hacia los restos arqueológicos de asentamientos maorí en el área. En el pasado también se podían encontrar huesos de moa.
