Pox es un aguardiente, elaborado a base de caña de azúcar, esta bebida es muy importante en la cultura Maya, dado que se utiliza de manera ceremonial. En Tzotzil y en Tseltal la palabra pox quiere decir: medicina, curación. Pox también se refiere a los medicamentos, así la palabra poxtaiwanej es relativa al médico y poxna´es la casa de las medicinas o farmacia.

Los pueblos descendientes de los mayas utilizan el Pox, en sus oraciones y ceremonias de curación, de ahí que la palabra pox tenga dos acepciones como bebida alcohólica y como medicamento, porque en la tradición maya se el pox se utiliza en los ritos de sanación.

El pox se utiliza también como símbolo de fraternidad o de acuerdo entre la comunidad, al final de las oraciones con las que concluyen un evento importante, todos dan un sorbo al mismo pox en señal de comunión, propiamente dicho es una manera de manifestar que como comunidad "están en un mismo corazón".
