Entre 1890 y 1975, esta era la división más alta.
La división contiene diez equipos y cada final de temporada el equipo vencedor es promovido a la Premier League, sujeta a la reunión de los criterios de estadio. El club de fondo es automáticamente relegado y el segundo club de fondo va a un final del desempate de temporada con los segundos, terceros y cuartos clubes colocados de la Segunda División.
Cada temporada se juega en enfrentamientos todos contra todos a cuatro vueltas.
