Arsaces I de Partia fue el jefe de los Parnos, nómadas Escitas o tribus Dahan del desierto, al oriente del Mar Caspio. Una tradición preservada por Flavio Arriano, hace a Arsaces I y su hermano Tirídates, descendiente del rey aqueménida Artajerjes II, pero esto no tiene ningún valor histórico.

Arsaces, buscó refugio, antes de que el rey de Bactriana, invadiera Partia, por entonces provincia del Imperio Seléucida, cerca del año 250 a. C. Según Flavio Arriano Arsaces fue muerto y lo sucedió su hermano. Pero otros cree que gobernó Partia hasta 211 a. C., cuando fue sucedido por su hijo Arsaces II.

Después de Arsaces I, todos los reyes de la dinastía arsácida , llevaron o agregaron al suyo, el nombre Arsaces,'ršk (Aršak), en griego Αρσακης. Con algunas excepciones solamente ese nombre aparece en las monedas del Imperio Parto (su genitivo ΑΡΣΑΚΟΥ al cual se agregan varios epítetos), y generalmente, además, muestran sentado al fundador de la Dinastía, sosteniendo en su mano un arco tensado. El Imperio Parto fu finalmente derribado el año 226 por Ardacher I (Ardaxšēr).

En el idioma chino antiguo el nombre de "Anxi" (Ch:安息, se pronuncia como ansiek en Chino medieval, proveniente del chino antiguo *Arsǝk ~ *Ansek), una transcripción del nombre dinástico Arsaces. Anxi fue descrita por el enviado chino Zhang Qian, quien visitó los países vecinos de Bactriana y Sogdiana en el año 126 a. C. e hizo conocer a Partia en China.
