En el argot organizativo, se utiliza la palabra span breaker para referirse a una posición que reduce el "span", o número de beneficios directos de otra posición. Por ejemplo, un Consejero delegado con 8 directores a su cargo ("span = 8") puede hacer, por ejemplo, que el director de ventas, el director de marketing y el director de grandes clientes reporten a un único director comercial ("span breaker"), y que sea éste director comercial el que reporte al Consejero delegado, de modo que el número de reportes al consejero delegado pase de 8 a 6.
