Twelve bar blues es una progresión de acordes, típica del blues y estilos posteriores. Adémas de la armonía, el blues utiliza un esquema de 12 compases de 4/4 y ritmo shuffle.

Un ejemplo básico es el siguiente:

Son posibles algunas variaciones. Como por ejemplo el uso de acordes con séptima antes de un cambio:

IV IV7 I I7

V IV I II7


Cuando el último compás es de Dominante se llama Turnarround y puede contener frases que le dan color.

Un ejemplo:
