Atheist Ireland es una asociación de ateos con base en la República de Irlanda.

Formación

El grupo fue fundado el 30 de noviembre de 2008 por miembros de la página Atheist.ie, comunidad virtual formada por Seamus Murnane en junio de 2006. Actualmente, su representante es el escritor y activista Michael Nugent.[1] Su lema es: Building a rational, ethical and secular society, free from superstition and supernaturalism. (Construyendo una sociedad racional y ética libre de supersticiones y sobrenaturalismo).

Contexto

Irlanda tiene una larga historia de religiosidad y conflictos religiosos entre comunidades de católicos y protestantes y aunque hoy en día la lucha entre ambos grupos es casi inexistente, persisten tensiones en la región de Irlanda del Norte.

Según un censo de la Central Statistics Office of Ireland en 2006, el 95,5% de la población irlandesa se adhiere a la religión oficial.[2]
