El Sistema ATP es un sistema de seguridad que supervisa la conducción en trenes. El ATP se encarga, entre otros, de marcar al conductor la velocidad máxima permitida en cada tramo de vía y de frenar el tren si se excede esa velocidad, de evitar la apertura de puertas fuera del punto de parada de cada estación o del lado incorrecto, de evitar que el conductor pueda rebasar un disco en rojo o que el tren colisione con el que le precede (cantón de seguridad). Se indica por cantones señalizados con balizas y señales, y permite ir hasta una velocidad determinada entre ellas. En caso de sobrepasar la velocidad máxima que se indica de una baliza a otra, el tren aplica freno de emergencia hasta detenerse.
De esta manera se evita una colisión al existir como mínimo un cantón entre trenes como espacio de seguridad. En caso de intentar pasarlo (rebase de señal y/o baliza) el tren se detiene.
