Henry Watson Fowler

Henry Watson Fowler (10 de marzo de 185826 de diciembre de 1933) fue un profesor inglés, lexicógrafo y comentarista del uso del idioma inglés. Fue especialmente conocido por su A Dictionary of Modern English Usage como también por su trabajo en el Concise Oxford Dictionary, el periódico The Times lo llamó "un genio lexicográfico".

Luego de asistir a la Universidad de Oxford, Fowler trabajó como profesor de colegio por numerosos años, luego trabajó como escritor independiente y periodista en Londres, Pero sin mucho éxito. En sociedad con su hermano Francis, a partir de 1906, comenzó a publicar libros sobre gramática seminal, estilo y lexicografía. Después de la muerte de su hermano en 1918, completó las obras en las que estaban colaborando y editó varias más.

Biografía

Juventud y estudios

Fowler nació el 10 de marzo de 1858 en Tonbridge, Kent. Sus padres, el reverendo Robert Fowler y su esposa Caroline, nee Watson, eran originarios de Devon. Robert Fowler era graduado de Cambridge, pastor y profesor. En el momemnto en que nació Henry, él estaba enseñando matemáticas en la escuela Tonbridge, pero pronto la familia se mudó cerca de Tunbridge Wells. Henry fue el mayor de 7 hermanos y tras la prematura muerte de su padre en 1879 Henry asumió el rol de líder y jefe del hogar, haciéndose cargo de sus hermanos menores (Charles, Alexander,Edward Seymour, Edith, Arthur, Francis y Herbert Samuel).
