La Burrell Collection es una colección de arte en la ciudad de Glasgow, en Escocia (Reino Unido). Está situada en Pollok Country Park, en la parte sur de la ciudad.

Historia

La colección fue reunida durante años por Sir William Burrell, un rico armador y coleccionista de arte que finalmente la regaló a la ciudad de Glasgow en 1944.[1] El regalo se hizo a condición de que se albergara en un edificio a 26 km del centro de Glasgow, para evitar los efectos dañinos del aire contaminado de la época y asi mostrar las obras en las mejores condiciones. Se tardó cerca de 20 años en encontrar un "hogar" adecuado para la colección, uno que reuniera todas las exigencias establecidas en los términos de la cesión, sin éxito. Con el tiempo, cuando la finca Pollok fue regalada a la ciudad en 1967, los albaceas hicieron que se quitaran ciertos términos del legado, lo que permitió que el lugar actual, a 5 km del centro de la ciudad y dentro de los límites de esta, fuera elegido para la colección.[2]

La colección

La Burrell contiene una importante colección de arte medieval incluyendo vidrieras y tapices, muebles de roble, armas y armaduras, arte islámico, objetos del Antiguo Egipto y China. También contiene obras impresionistas de Degas y Cézanne, escultura moderna y toda una serie de objetos de todo el mundo, coleccionados por un solo hombre.[2]
