Cy Twombly (nacido en Lexington, Virginia, el 25 de abril de 1928) es un pintor estadounidense del Expresionismo abstracto. Es bien conocido por sus pinturas graffiti de estilo caligráfico de gran tamaño sobre fondos de colores gris, beis o color hueso. Desde 1947 hasta 1949 estudió en la escuela del Museo de Bellas Artes de Boston, en la Universidad Washington y Lee de Lexington y en la Liga de Estudiantes de Arte de Nueva York desde 1950 hasta 1951. Allí, conoció a Robert Rauschenberg quien le animó a acudir al Black Mountain College, cerca de Asheville (Carolina del Norte, donde conoció a John Cage. En 1951 y 1952, estudió allí con Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, y Ben Shahn.

Twombly es conocido sobre todo por emborronar la frontera entre el dibujo y la pintura. Muchos de sus cuadros más conocidos de finales de los años sesenta son reminiscencias de un encerado de escuela en el que alguien ha practicado la «e», o cientos de año de graffiti de baños sobre un muro.
