Conde de Minto

Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmond, 1er Conde de Minto (Edimburgo, Escocia, 23 de abril de 1751 - Stevenage, Inglaterra, 21 de junio de 1814) fue un político y diplomático escocés.

Su bisabuelo fue el 1er Baronet Minto, quien también era ancestro del escritor Robert Louis Stevenson.

Alrededor de 1763, Elliot y su hermano Hugh fueron enviados a París, donde sus estudios estuvieron a cargo del filósofo escocés David Hume, y donde conocieron a Honoré Mirabeau. Posteriormente, Gilbert continuó sus estudios en la Universidad de Edimburgo y en la Christ Church de Oxford.

En 1776, accedió a un puesto en el Parlamento, donde conoció a Edmund Burke, quien le ayudó en los ataques contra Warren Hastings y Sir Elijah Impey.

En 1794 Elliot fue designado gobernador de Córcega, y en 1797 adoptó los apellidos de Murray-Kynynmound y le fue otorgado el título de Baron Minto. Entre 1799 y 1801 fue enviado extraordinario en Viena, para ser nombrado Gobernador General de la India a finales de 1806. Gobernó con gran éxito hasta 1813, periodo durante el cual la presencia británica se expandió al área de las Molucas, Java y otros territorios hasta ese momento en posesión holandesa.

Al terminar su periodo de gobierno, fue nombrado Vizconde Melgund y Conde de Minto.

Murió en Stevenage el 21 de junio de 1814, siendo enterrado en la Abadía de Westminster.
