John Kay fue un inventor inglés nacido en el poblado de Bury (condado de Lancashire) en 1704. Es conocido históricamente por ser el padre de la lanzadera volante; una herramienta de producción que desarrolló en 1733, la cual permitía tejer piezas de algodón en mayor escala y en mayor velocidad de lo que se podría lograr con la habilidad manual de un trabajador.

La burguesía inglesa nunca reconoció la patente de su invento, y los trabajadores que se vieron desempleados por causa directa la lanzadera volante destruyeron su casa en Bury en 1753. A causa de esto se traslada a Francia, en donde muere completamente arruinado en 1780.

John Kay es ampliamente recordado por la economía moderna, puesto que se le atribuye el inicio de la revolución agrícola inglesa; la cual posteriormente daría génesis a la revolución industrial anglosajona. La lanzadera volante reemplaza por pri­mera vez a te­jedores especializados en la cadena de producción de textiles, generando una necesidad de aumentar la manufactura de hilos para compensar la velocidad de tejido que ofrecía esta herramienta.

Tal necesidad se convirtió en el motor primario del desarrollo de las innovaciones tecnológicas, que finalmente convergerían en el nacimiento del maquinismo.
