Kathleen Jessie Raine (Ilford (Essex), 14 de junio de 1908 - Londres, 6 de julio de 2003) fue una poetisa y crítica literaria británica. Fue una de los miembros fundadores de la Temenos Academy.

Biografía

Raine nació en Ilford (Essex). Su madre era escocesa y sus padres se conocieron cuando ambos estudiaban en el Armstrong College en Newcastle upon Tyne.

Raine pasó gran parte de la Primera Guerra Mundial con su tía Peggy Black Northumberland. La región sirvió de inspiración para muchas de sus poesías posteriores. Sus experiencias allí son descritas en el primer libro de su autobiografía, Farewell Happy Fields (1973).

Fue educada en la County High School en Ilford y posteriormente estudió ciencias y psicología Girton College, Cambridge, en donde obtuvo una maestría en 1929. En Cambridge tuvo la oportunidad de conocer a Jacob Bronowski, William Empson, Humphrey Jennings y Malcolm Lowry.[1] Durante sus últimos años, mantuvo una amistad con el escritor cabalístico Z'ev ben Shimon Halevi.

Raine tuvo una vida privada tumultuosa. Estuvo casada con Hugh Sykes Davies, a quien ella abandonó por Charles Madge, con quien se casó y tuvo dos hijos (Anna y James Wolf), aunque el matrimonio se separaría posteriormente. También mantuvo un amorío con el autor Gavin Maxwell, pero su relación terminó en 1956.

Raine murió en Londres, poco después de sufrir un accidente.

Carrera literaria

Su primer libro de poesía, Stone And Flower (1943), fue publicado por Meary James Thurairajah Tambimuttu e ilustrado por Barbara Hepworth. En 1946, lanzó el poemario Living in Time, seguido por The Pythoness en (1949). En 2000, publicó Collected Poems, en el cual recolecta poemas de los once poemarios que publicó previamente.

Su obra en prosa más conocida es su autobiografía en tres volúmenes. Inicialmente, cada volumen fue publicado por aparte y posteriormente se publicó de manera completa, editado por Lucien Jenkins.

Raine también realizó varias traducciones, incluyendo La prima Bette (1948) y Las ilusiones perdidas (1951) de Honoré de Balzac.

Raine contribuyó frecuentemente con la revista académica Studies in Comparative Religion, la cual se enfocaba en simbolismos religiosos. En 1981, fundó la pulbicación Temenos y, en 1990, cofundó la Temenos Academy of Integral Studies, una institución académica especializada en filosofía y su relación con la poesía y la cultura.

Raine fue investigadora en el Girton College entre 1955 y 1961. Durante 1962, fue la Andrew Mellon Lecturer en la Galería Nacional de Arte en Washington D. C. Raine también enseñó una clase de Mitología y Literatura en Universidad Harvard durante un verano.
