Ma Rainey

Gertrude Malissa Nix Pridgett Rainey (Columbus (Georgia), 26 de abril de 1886 - 22 de diciembre de 1939), conocida como Ma Rainey, fue una cantante negra de blues clásico, una de las primeras en hacerlo con acompañamiento de piano o de orquesta de jazz. Conocida como la "madre del blues" (en parte por su labor de mentora de Bessie Smith), sus grabaciones, un centenar, realizadas cuando tenía cuarenta años, corresponden a los años entre 1923 y 1929, y ejemplifican un tipo de blues urbano ya estandarizado.

Influyó a grandes figuras como Ethel Waters y Billie Holiday.

Casada a los 14 años con Will Rainey, realizó de joven varias giras con los Rabbit Foot Minstrels.

Se retiró a los 47 años, muriendo a los 53 por problemas cardíacos.

En 1994, el servicio postal estadounidense editó un sello postal en su honor.
