Biografía
Recibió su educación en la University of Chicago, en el American Conservatory y el Instituto Curtis de Filadelfia perfeccionándose en la Juilliard School de New York.
Vivió en Marruecos y en París (1949-57).
Declarado homosexual, en 1969 publicó sus diarios (Paris Diary) donde describió sus relaciones con Leonard Bernstein, Noel Coward, Samuel Barber, y Virgil Thomson.
Como ensayista a escrito varios libros "Setting the Tone", "Music From the Inside Out", y "Music and People".
