Off the Wall es un álbum de Michael Jackson editado en 1979. Con alrededor de 20 millones de copias vendidas, 7,5 de ellos en Estados Unidos, es uno de los 100 discos más vendidos de la historia y un hito imprescindible de la música disco.[1] [2]

Producido por Quincy Jones, supone para Jackson el haber alcanzado ese cierto grado de madurez que permite ciertas extravagancias.

Como dato curioso, Off the Wall fue lanzado a la venta el mes en que Michael Jackson cumplió 21 años de edad, y no mucho tiempo más tarde, la revista Rolling Stone, lo incluye entre los 100 discos más vendidos de la decada de los años 70.

Cuatro son los temas firmados por Jackson en este álbum, de los cuales el primer single, "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough", fue un gran éxito en los Estados Unidos y en el Reino Unido. Con este tema, Jackson ganó su primer Grammy en la categoría de mejor interpretación de rhythm and blues. Stevie Wonder le ofreció a Jackson el tema "I Can't Help It", y Paul McCartney la canción "Girlfriend". Rod Temperton, el letrista que más tarde colaboraría en el álbum Thriller, ofreció en esta ocasión joyas como "Rock with You", que alcanzó el nº1 en EE.UU., o el tema que da título al disco, "Off the Wall". Otra de las canciones a destacar es "She's Out of My Life", tema que Jackson incluyó siempre en sus giras por su gran valor emocional. Otro tema que alcanzó una popularidad notable sin haber sido lanzado como single fue "Workin' Day and Night", que Michael Jackson también incluyó en muchas de sus giras.

Off the Wall merece una mención aparte en lo que respecta al tipo de música del álbum. A diferencia de los discos previos y posteriores al mismo, contiene un sonido mucho más soul y se aproxima más a las melodías de música negra, pero también hay funk y disco[1]

Para Off the Wall se grabaron dos vídeos musicales con el fin de promocionar el álbum. Los vídeos fueron "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough" y "Rock with You", ambos alcanzando el primer puesto en las listas de popularidad de EE.UU. Ambos temas serían incluidos en diversas compilaciones de grandes éxitos del artista, en especial en Number Ones, un disco que recopila todos sus números 1.

Otra cosa que habría que mencionar en lo que respecta al disco es que fue reeditado en 16 de octubre de 2001, bajo el nombre de Off the Wall: Special Edition, como se hizo con sus tres discos posteriores: Thriller, Bad y Dangerous. En esta ocasión se incluyó un nuevo libreto, que incluye todas las letras de las canciones (exceptuando las de la nueva edición). Hay varias entrevistas hacia el productor del disco Quincy Jones, y al compositor Rod Temperton. Se agregan 2 canciones más a esta edición: los demos correspondientes a "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough" y "Workin' Day and Night".
