El political hip hop o political rap (del idioma inglés hip hop político) es un subgénero del hip hop nacido en los años 80. Inspirados en los predicadores políticos de los 1970, tales como The Last Poets y Gil Scott-Heron, Public Enemy fue el primer grupo del political hip hop.[1] Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five lanzaron el primer trabajo sociopolítico conocido en el ambiente del rap, con la canción de 1982 llamada "The Message", que inspiró a numerosos raperos para hacer frente a temas sociales y políticos.[2]

Explícitamente el hip hop se relaciona con la política, pero de una forma distinta al conscious hip hop, porque tiene como referencia a los artistas que tienen afiliación a la política fuerte y abierta con órdenes del día, a diferencia de la crítica social más sentida y generalizada del conscious hip hop. También el género puede ser utilizado para incluir a los artistas políticos de todas las tendencias ideológicas, mientras que el conscious hip hop generalmente implica una afiliación a la izquierda [3] o de esta perspectiva.
