Historia

Australian rock band Powderfinger probably thought they were past playing wedding gigs. But the former pub band turned major international rock outfit will have their next starring role at the wedding of the year.

The band has been invited to perform at the wedding of Australian Mary Donaldson to Denmark's Crown Prince Frederik in May.

Fellow Aussie rocker Diesel was also asked to attend but has been forced to turn down the once-in-a-lifetime invitation due to other commitments.

"I'm of course disappointed I can't make it to Denmark for the royal wedding," Diesel, whose real name is Mark Lizotte, said.

"Unfortunately I'm in the middle of recording a new album, but I am sure that Powderfinger, who are one of the great Australian bands, will fly the flag!"

"She's obviously from Tasmania and has suggested Powderfinger's name as well so there is talk of a few Australian acts going over there and doing a bit of a thing," Diesel said.

Powderfinger are currently overseas and were uncontactable but a record company spokeswoman confirmed the group would perform at the wedding.
