Ranjit Singh

Ranjit Singh (1801–1839) fue un majarash y fundador de la confederación sij del Panyab.

Nació el 13 de noviembre de 1780 en Gujranwala, y falleció el 27 de junio de 1839 en Lahore.

A la muerte de su padre (en 1792) se convirtió en el jefe de los shukerchakias (un grupo sij situado en lo que hoy es Pakistán). En 1799 conquistó Lahore, la capital del Panyab (hoy en Pakistán) y en 1801 se proclamó por sí mismo maharajá del Panyab.

En 1802 capturó Amritsar, una ciudad sagrada de los sijs. Para 1820 había consolidado su dominio sobre la totalidad del Panyab entre los ríos Sutlej e Indo. Creó el Estado sij, el cual tenía sijs, musulmanes e hindúes tanto en el ejército como en el gabinete. Apenas murió Singh, el Estado colapsó.
