Rule of thumb es una expresión inglesa que designa un principio de amplia aplicación que no necesariamente es estrictamente preciso ni confiable en cada situación.

Es un procedimiento de fácil aprendizaje y aplicación para recordar o calcular aproximadamente un valor, o para tomar una decisión. Es cercano al concepto de heurística, utilizado en matemática, psicología y Ciencias de la computación (particularmente en diseño de algoritmos). El término es ampliamente usado en obras técnicas que enfatizan principios generales, tal como en Ingeniería de software o Administración de empresas.

Un ejemplo de aplicar una "regla de cajón" (rule of thumb) es el cambio de aceite en un automóvil cada cierto número de kilómetros recorridos: "...de entrada, cambia el aceite cada tantos kilómetros..."

La traducción literal es "regla del pulgar", y parece tener su origen en la práctica de los antiguos carpinteros, quienes usaban su pulgar en lugar de una regla para realizar mediciones.
