Se conoce como slang a la jerga de registro coloquial e informal usada en el idioma inglés.

Parafraseando a otro autor, The Slang Thesaurus expone que: «El principal estímulo del slang es el sexo, dinero y el licor». A lo que se puede agregar muchos otros aspectos cotidianos de la vida diaria, emociones y de relaciones sociales.

Entre algunos ejemplos de slang en el inglés de Estados Unidos están:

  • Para referirse a un hombre: dude, guy (de Guy Fawkes), brother* (usar las palabras "sister" o "brother" normalmente es para referirse a los mejores amigos o amigas en la cultura afroamericana, pero todavía son palabras poco populares fuera de esta cultura).
  • Para referirse a una mujer: babe (la palabra "babe" normalmente está usada para una chica si es atractiva) , chick, dudette, sister"*
  • Para referirse a la muerte: big sleep , end of the line , bought the farm, kick the bucket, pushing up daises, etc.
  • Adicto a las drogas: junkie, dopehead (alquien que fuma marihuana) , druggie, etc.
  • Para referirse a la cabeza: noggin, bean (RU), etc.
  • "That's bad!" (¡Eso es malo!)-una frase pasada de moda que solía significar lo opuesto, significa ahora que algo es estupendo.
  • Para referirse a un mejor amigo, normalmente para referirse a un hombre o un chico sólo: Bud, Buddy.
  • "Who's your (yo) Daddy?"-("¿Quién es tu papito?") una frase usada para reírse de alguien que ha sido vencido en algo, usualmente si ha sido derrotado en un juego. Esta frase no suele utilizarse.
