Barbara Tuchman

Barbara Wertheim Tuchman (Nueva York, 30 de enero de 19126 de febrero de 1989) fue una historiadora estadounidense, periodista y escritora.

Tuchman, hija de un banquero y nieta de Henry Morgenthau, Sr., embajador de Woodrow Wilson en Turquía, se graduó en el Radcliffe College en 1933 y trabajó como periodista varios años antes de dedicarse a escribir libros.

Como escritora, Tuchman se ha enfocado en la historia popular. Su estilo narrativo agudo y drástico abarca diversos temas como el siglo XIV y la Primera Guerra Mundial, y ha vendido millones de copias.

Tuchman fue la autora de libros que compitieron con los más populares en la materia. Inventing the Middle Ages de Norman Cantor, una historia acerca de los historiadores medievalistas, describe su trabajo en este contexto.

Tuchmann ha ganado dos veces el Premio Pulitzer en la categoría de ensayos y obras de divulgación, primero por The Guns of August y más tarde con Stilwell and the American Experience in China.

En La torre del orgullo, la tesis que mantiene Tuchman es que la que más tarde se conoció como Belle Époque resultó hermoseada en el recuerdo a causa del horror que la siguió: la I Guerra Mundial. La autora analiza detalladamente este período con el fin de descubrir en él fenómenos que engendraron la tragedia posterior. Es una continuación de su libro anterior, Los cañones de agosto –centrado precisamente en la Gran Guerra–, y sigue los cánones liberales anglosajones de interpretación política y social: realista y marcadamente empirista.
