William C. Cobham es un destacado baterista, músico y compositor panameño-estadounidense de jazz y jazz fusión.

Biografía

Nacido en Panamá, el 16 de mayo de 1944. En su infancia, él y su familia se trasladaron a la ciudad de Nueva York (Estados Unidos) donde asistió a la secundaria High School of Music and Art.

Comienzos

Más adelante, sus primera experiencia como baterista en una banda, fue en una banda del Ejército Norteamericano donde adquirió cierta fama. Posteriormente, participo con artistas como el piano1pianista Horace Silver, el saxofonista Stanley Turrentine, la teclista Shirley Scott y el guitarrista George Benson.

A finales de la década de los 60's, y principios de los 70's, se va más por el estilo de fusion jazz, mezclando elementos como el rock n' roll, el soul y el funk. Cobham colabora con los hermanos Randy y Michael Brecker y con el guitarrista John Abercrombie en la banda Dreams, así como también con el reconocido trompetista Miles Davis, con quien establecería un vínculo musical muy fuerte, y con quien pudo ganarse fama participando en el Live-mal y en el tributo a Jack Johnson. En esa época, Cobham se estaba ganando buena fama, principalmente por su revolucionadora técnica, la cual mezclaba complejidad, innovación y originalidad.

Mahavishnu Orchestra

Antes de su trabajo con la Mahavishnu Orchestra, Billy Cobham grabo con el guitarrista John McLaughlin en el álbum My Goal's Beyond. Más tarde, en el año 1971, Cobham funda junto a John McLaughlin la Mahavisnhu Orchestra, con la cual hacen giras del 1971 al 1973 y con la cual Cobhman graba dos álbumes de estudio y uno en vivo.

Solista

En mayo de 1973, graba su primer álbum como solista Spectrum en el cual hace una fusión de los mejores discos de la historia, y en el cual toca con artistas como Jan Hammer (teclista de la Mahavishnu Orchestra) y con el guitarrista Tommy Bolin (quien luego seria guitarrista de la banda británica de hard rock Deep Purple). En el mismo año, antes de terminar una gira con la Mahavishnu Orchestra, Cobham coolabora con los guitarristas Carlos Santana y John McLaughlin.

Años más tarde, firma con la CTI Records, expandiendo su repertorio de fusion jazz. También hizo participaciones con artistas como Chick Corea, Jack Bruce, Clem Clempson, Dave Sancious, y otros, principalmente en giras y conciertos.
