Chijoraji

Chijoraji o Chijoragi, (en idioma guanche), nombre que recibe el niño Jesús que porta en su mano la Virgen de Candelaria (llamada Chaxiraxi por los guanches). La virgen apareció en una playa de Güímar en Tenerife (Canarias) aproximadamente en 1400.

Los cronistas de la época escribieron:

  • Chijoragi = «adoraban por cosa Celestial, y suprema Deidad ala Virgen de Candelaria, y al Niño en su mano derecha llamaban Chijoragi hasta el tiempo de la Conquista contaban haber cien años solares que tenían à esta Señora en su tierra, mui pocos mas ò menos y hacia en ellos admirables prodigios en medio de ser paganos, y idolatras» (Marín 1694: 82).
