Giorgio Strehler

Giorgio Strehler fue un actor y director de teatro italiano, nacido en Barcola, Trieste (Italia), 14 de agosto de 1921, falleció repentinamente en pleno trabajo el 25 de diciembre de 1997 en Lugano (Suiza).

Fundó en 1947, junto a Paolo Grassi, el Piccolo Teatro de Milano, constituido en un centro importante de la dirección teatral moderna.

Strehler estuvo fuertemente unido al desarrollo del teatro político y fue el difusor de Bertolt Brecht en Italia.

El objetivo del Piccolo Teatro era el de ser un teatro popular e ideológicamente opuesto al movimiento fascista. Innovaron en el repertorio y en el estilo de interpretación.

Strheler hizo seis versiones diferentes de Arlequín servidor de dos amos de Carlo Goldoni, versiones que alcanzaron gran fama, la primera en 1948.

Todas las siguientes puestas en escena se iban despojando progresivamente hasta terminar siendo teatro puro y gozoso.

El teatro era el centro de su vida; sin embargo, varias veces renunció a su cargo, en protesta por el apoyo muy escaso del Estado a las necesidades artísticas del teatro.

Strehler dijo alguna vez que la vida del Piccolo ha sido y es un continuo riesgo. Riesgo de morir en cada espectáculo. Hemos trabajado y trabajamos sin red. Siempre. Para nosotros cada estreno ha sido una agonía y ha supuesto el riesgo de tener que cerrar el telón para siempre.
