Harriet Backer (Holmestrand, 21 de enero de 1845 - Oslo, 25 de marzo de 1932) fue una pintora noruega. Alcalzó renombre por sus pinturas de interiores y paisajes de colores vivos y animada claridad. Es una de las pintoras más reconocidas de Noruega y fue una de las mujeres pioneras en el arte en toda Europa.

Vida y obra

Nació en la localidad de Holmestrand, pero a los 12 años se mudó con su familia a Cristianía (hoy Oslo). Ahí, ingresó a la Escuela de Pintura Johan Fredrik Eckersberg, donde estudiaría con Knud Bergslien como maestro.

Salió de Noruega para estudiar en Múnich; ahí cultivó una amistad con su compatriota Eilif Peterssen, quien le realizó un retrato. Realizó varios viajes por Europa en compañía de su hermana la pianista Agathe Backer-Grøndahl. Vivió en París durante 10 años junto a su amiga Kitty Kielland; en esa ciudad recibió la influencia del impresionismo, si bien su obra ha sido catalogada generalmente como realista. En la capital francesa tuvo como maestros a destacados artistas, como Léon Bonnat y Jean-Léon Gérôme. De regreso a Noruega se integró al Círculo de Lysaker, un grupo artístico-político de corte nacionalista que fomentaba la cultura tradicional y la independencia de Noruega.

Ganó una medalla de plata en la Exposición Universal de 1889, en 1908 recibió la Medalla al Mérito del Rey.

Algunas de sus pinturas más reconocidas son Soledad (1878-1880), Interior azul (1883), A la luz de la lámpara (1890) y Bautismo en la iglesia de Tanum (1892). Sus obras se hallan en varios de los museos noruegos más importantes, como la Nasjonalgalleriet de Oslo y el Museo de Arte de Bergen. Otras más son propiedad del municipio de Bærum.
