His Band and the Street Choir es el cuarto álbum de estudio del músico norirlandés Van Morrison, publicado en 1970. En un principio, el álbum fue planeado para editarse bajo el nombre de Virgo's Fool.[1]

En América, el álbum fue, al igual que su predecesor, Moondance, bien recibido por la crítica, especialmente su primer sencillo, "Domino", que alcanzó el Top Ten de las listas de singles.[2] Otros dos singles extraídos del álbum, a pesar de obtener un menor éxito, también entraron en las listas de éxitos.

Historia

Grabación

La producción del álbum dio comienzo en la primavera de 1970.[3] Morrison volvió a entrar en el estudio de grabación en verano para regrabar porciones y completar el álbum.[3] Cinco canciones de la segunda sesión de grabación incluyen "The Street Choir".[3] Van quedó insatisfecho con algunas de las grabaciones, notablemente con la canción "Street Choir", a la que añadió un nuevo retoque en el último minuto.[4] Al respecto, Van Morrison dijo: "Fue originalmente un concepto sobre un álbum a cappella... Street Choir iba a ser un grupo a capella. Quería que esos chicos formaran un grupo a capella, de modo que podía reducir una gran cantidad de canciones con sólo una guitarra. Pero no funcionó".[5] De las sesiones de grabación de Moondance se incorporaron tres músicos: Jack Schroer, John Platania y John Klingberg. También de las sesiones de Moondance sobrevivió el trío vocal integrado por Emily Houston, Judy Clay y Jackie Verdell, que cantan en "If I Ever Needed Someone". La esposa de Van, Janet (Planet) Rigsbee, también canta en el álbum como parte de "The Street Choir", y diseñó el álbum e introdujo notas en la contraportada.[6]

Después de la publicación

El crítico de la revista musical Rolling Stone Jon Landau dijo: "His Band and the Street Choir es un álbum libre. Fue grabado con un mínimo exceso de doblaje con el evidente intento de mostrar la otra cara de Moondance. Y si tiene un defecto es que, al igual que Moondance, es más de lo que se propuso ser. Unos cuantos temas menos con la gravedad de "Street Choir" hubieran hecho del álbum algo más perfecto."[7]

El crítico de la revista ZigZag John Tobler escribió sobre el álbum que "aunque fuese inferior a Moondance, es mejor que el ochenta por ciento de los discos que tienes en tu colección".[8] Por otra parte, el biógrafo de Van Morrison Brian Hinton señaló que His Band and the Street Choir es una "vaga reminiscencia del Nashville Skyline de Bob Dylan".[9]

El interior de la edición en vinilo muestra a Morrison respaldado por el grupo de músicos con sus esposas e hijos en fotografías tomadas durante una fiesta del hijo de Planet, Peter, y fueron posteriormente tachadas por el propio Van Morrison como "basura".[6] Posteriormente, Johnny Rogan comentó que "aún peor era la portada de estilo visionario que incluía una imagen irrisoria de Morrison".[6] Sobre la portada, el propio Van Morrison diría: "Yo nunca fui un hippie. Mucha gente pensaba que era un hippie porque llevaba el pelo largo y barba. No era verdad. Tenía pelo largo y barba porque donde vivía hacía mucho frío. Nunca lo llevaba por verano. Siempre lo dejé largo en invierno porque donde vivía, en Nueva York, había nieve durante cinco meses del año".[10]
