John Christopher Wells

John Christopher Wells (11 de marzo de 1939). MA (Cambridge), PhD (Universidad de Londres) es un fonetista británico y profesor de esperanto en la University College de Londres, donde hasta 2006 fue titular de la cátedra de Fonética. Es miembro del comité de cinco personas que presta asesoría académica a Linguaphone (empresa que presta servicios para el aprendizaje de idiomas)

Es mejor conocido por su libro y casete Accents of English, el libro y cedé The Sounds of the IPA, Lingvistikaj Aspektoj de Esperanto, y el Longman Pronunciation Dictionary. Es autor del diccionario Inglés-Esperanto más usado y es también el inventor del alfabeto fonético X-SAMPA. Durante el verano, John Christopher Wells dirige un curso de dos semanas de fonética que se centra en la fonética práctica y teórica, además de aspectos concercientes a la enseñanza de la fonética. El curso termina con exámenes orales y escritos, que dan el «Certificado AFI de Competencia Fonética Inglesa» (IPA Certificate of Proficiency in the Phonetics of English). Una considerable parte de la investigación de Wells se focaliza en la descripción fonética de las variedades del inglés. Desde 2003 es el presidente de la Asociación Fonética Internacional.

Wells es un conocido defensor del idioma esperanto. Fue presidente de la Asociación Universal de Esperanto entre 1989 y 1995, y actualmente es presidente de la Akademio de Esperanto.
